In the tradition of the classics like The End of Vandalism and Infinite Jest, Thomas Drury has created a remarkable trilogy of novels that are equal parts comedy, tragedy and heartbreaking social observation. In the years since his first novel was serialized in The New Yorker, Drury has received an ALA Notable Book Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and numerous other literary honors, but many readers remain unaware of his work. In a triumphant return to Grouse County, Iowa, and its inhabitants in his latest novel Pacific, he proves that he has not lost his genius for observational humor or for conveying the bleak beauty of small-town America. With a sense of humor that is both dry and deadpan, Tom Drury has the ability to turn almost any situation into a laugh-out-loud moment. His characters do messy, regrettable and occasionally unlikable things, but we feel for them because we have created them in partnership with the writer. And while his books do trace arcs of incident and intrigue, they never feel artificially driven; the pleasure in reading his fiction lies in the people and places themselves.
